‘Fasting With God’: Can An American Revival Come Through Fasting?

“I believe revival is going to sweep from California through the United States.”

QUICK FACTS:
  • Author and speaker Tammy Hotsenpiller is spearheading a church-wide fast at Influence Church in Anaheim Hills, California, with the aim of asking God to bring revival, renewal, and reformation to America.
  • The fast begins on January 21st and will last for 21 days.
  • Tammy, who is also President of Total Life Coach as well as Founder and President of Women of Influence, spoke with American Faith about her new book, Fasting with God, explaining that her message is not just about making meaningful personal sacrifices and learning self-control, but also about “revival.”
  • “We are at a turning point in America right now, where we get to decide what our future is,” said Tammy, describing her motivation for writing the book. “Are we going to be annihilated, or are we going to be elevated? Is God going to continue to use us as a lighthouse among the nations, or is our candlestick out? I believe we’re going to see another move of God.”
  • Hotsenpiller went on to cite Bible passages that teach that certain spiritual victories can only be achieved through fasting. “Are we ready now to see God? Maybe many of us have been praying, but have we truly committed to fasting?” she asked. “It’s time for us to get serious. Because we know that Jesus said to the disciples ‘When you fast…’ not ‘If you fast.’ He has called us to fasting.”
  • Tammy will host daily coaching videos from her website at 7 am PT every morning for about 12 minutes, beginning this Thursday, Jan 20. “I’m going to coach you on everything from spiritual warfare, temptations, and techniques for handling hunger as you fast. Every day will highlight a different fasting focus, a name of God for that day, and three discussion questions.”

FASTING TO “SUBDUE THE ENEMY”:
  • “What we’re trying to do is learn how to suppress, temper, and control the flesh,” Hotsenpiller said. “Because when we deny the flesh we are able to embrace the Spirit of God. I can’t rely on my flesh, giving in to it every time it tells me to eat something, or whatever the temptation is.”
  • “When I discipline myself to say no to my flesh, then I’m going to learn how to discipline myself in later matters of temptation—whether its alcohol or pornography or whatever you’re tempted by—we are learning how to subdue the enemy.”
  • The church leader went on to argue that fasting can make us “filled with the Spirit of God, which in turn makes us ready to battle the enemies of America, the enemies of our land, the enemies who are trying to take out this country, which is a lighthouse to the world.”
  • “That’s why I think that if the church rises up and joins into a corporate fast, we can be that lighthouse again,” she concluded.
