Faith Leaders Urge for Christmas Ceasefire in Ukraine

Over a thousand faith leaders in the United States have signed a petition calling for a Christmas ceasefire in Ukraine.

The petition, which was sponsored by Fellowship of Reconciliation-USA, CODEPINK, and the National Council of Elders, brings together representatives from various religious traditions,

The petition states, “As people of faith and conscience, believing in the sanctity of all life on this planet, we call for a Christmas truce in Ukraine…we urge our government to take a leadership role in bringing the war in Ukraine to an end.”

The petition cites Pope Benedict XV’s appeal for a temporary truce during World War I as inspiration.

Medea Benjamin, co-founder of the peace group CODEPINK, commented, “Negotiation is not a euphemism for capitulation, nor is it a rationalization of Putin’s aggression. It is simply a recognition that the end of this war cannot be achieved by more war. Any prospect for a pause in hostilities should be acted on.”

The petitioners hope that a temporary ceasefire could lead to a negotiated settlement and ultimately bring an end to the conflict.
