F.D.A. Says COVID’s ‘Place’ Is ‘Alongside Other Common Respiratory Viruses Such as Influenza’

Peer-reviewed study says COVID is “the new normal.”

QUICK FACTS:
  • A publication in the peer-reviewed medical journal JAMA states that “it is time to accept that the presence” of coronavirus is “the new normal.”
  • The authors argue that COVID’s now-permanent presence in the world means it should be viewed as belonging with “other common” viruses.
  • “[COVID] will likely circulate globally for the foreseeable future, taking its place alongside other common respiratory viruses such as influenza,” the authors write.
  • The study’s authors include the FDA’s Commissioner Robert Califf, Principal Deputy Commissioner Janet Woodcock, and the agency’s director of the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, Dr. Peter Marks.
VACCINES & NATURAL IMMUNITY ‘BLUNT’ FUTURE OUTBREAKS:

“Widespread vaccine- and infection-induced immunity, combined with the availability of effective therapeutics, could blunt the effects of future outbreaks,” the FDA officials write.

BACKGROUND:
  • Another peer-reviewed study authored by doctors from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) analyzed COVID-19 vaccine safety data from Israel and evaluated the association between instances of cardiac arrest (CA) and acute coronary syndrome (ACS) in the 16–39-year-old population.
  • The researchers found that there was a 25% increase in “cardiovascular events” among young populations in Israel.
  • “An increase of over 25% was detected in both call types during January–May 2021, compared with the years 2019–2020,” the authors stated.
  • They also found that emergency call rates were “significantly associated” with vaccine administration, writing that “the weekly emergency call counts were significantly associated with the rates of 1st and 2nd vaccine doses administered to this age group but were not with COVID-19 infection rates.”
