Federal agencies under President Biden tracked foreign nationals visiting Elon Musk in 2022 and 2023. The Department of Homeland Security and Department of Justice monitored visitors—mainly from Eastern Europe—linked to Musk’s properties and business operations.
Despite broad surveillance, no charges were filed. The FBI was briefed, but no public action followed. The current status of the investigation under President Trump remains unknown.
Musk holds top-secret clearance through SpaceX and was a key political donor in 2024, launching a $250 million super PAC supporting President Trump. Officials feared foreign influence and used travel data to track visitors to Musk’s homes in Texas and California.
One concern involved a Russian national with government ties. Musk also briefly communicated with Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2022, which officials cited as a reason for scrutiny.
Private security for Musk’s super PAC vetted visitors, but federal monitoring continued independently. No evidence of wrongdoing was found, raising concerns among conservatives about federal overreach.
Legal observers warn that such surveillance could threaten civil liberties. DHS and DOJ have not commented, and there is no sign the Trump administration has closed or continued the probe.
