Ex-NFL Punter Arrested During ‘MAGA’ Plaque Protest at California City Council Meeting

Former NFL punter Chris Kluwe was arrested on February 18, 2025, during a Huntington Beach City Council meeting in California. Kluwe, known for his activism on social issues, protested a proposed plaque for the public library featuring the words “Magical,” “Alluring,” “Galvanizing,” and “Adventurous,” which form the acronym “MAGA.” The plaque’s inscription read: “Through hope and change our nation has built back better to the golden era of Making America Great Again!”

During the meeting, Kluwe criticized the “MAGA” movement, stating it represents attempts to erase transgender individuals, promote racism, and enforce censorship and book bans. He declared his intention to engage in peaceful civil disobedience and approached the council members, leading to his arrest by Huntington Beach police officers. Kluwe was detained for approximately four hours before being released.

The Huntington Beach City Council, composed entirely of Republican members, has recently enacted measures reflecting conservative values. These actions include banning the gay pride flag from flying over City Hall, restricting access to certain library books, and declaring the city a “non-sanctuary city” concerning illegal immigration.

Kluwe’s protest aimed to raise public awareness rather than change the council’s stance. He emphasized the importance of standing up and speaking truth to power in a manner that others can emulate.
