Elon Musk’s DOGE Team to Overhaul Air Traffic Control

Personnel from Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) are set to visit the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Air Traffic Control command center in Virginia on February 17, 2025. This visit marks the beginning of a federal initiative to modernize and reform the U.S. air traffic control system, which has faced increasing scrutiny following recent aviation incidents.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced the visit, stating that DOGE officials will assess the current system, speak with air traffic controllers, and propose technological improvements. The primary goal is to enhance safety, efficiency, and reliability by integrating advanced computerized systems into an industry that still relies on decades-old technology.

The push for reform gained momentum after a mid-air collision near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport on January 29, 2025, which resulted in 67 fatalities. In response to the tragedy, President Donald Trump called for a major overhaul of what he described as an “outdated and inefficient” air traffic control system. He emphasized the need for a “great computerized system” that could reduce human error and improve coordination between flights.

DOGE, established under the Trump administration and led by Musk, has been actively reviewing various federal agencies to eliminate inefficiencies and improve operations. Under Musk’s leadership, DOGE has championed automation and private-sector innovation to address long-standing bureaucratic challenges. The FAA, often criticized for slow modernization efforts, is now a primary focus of this reform agenda.

However, the initiative has raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest, given Musk’s leadership of SpaceX, a company regulated by the FAA. Some lawmakers and aviation experts worry that the reforms could prioritize cost-cutting measures over safety regulations. Others argue that a rapid overhaul could disrupt existing air traffic control protocols before new systems are fully tested.

Despite these concerns, Musk’s involvement is seen by supporters as a much-needed push toward modernization. The FAA has struggled for years to upgrade its air traffic control technology, with projects frequently delayed due to bureaucratic red tape and funding constraints. Proponents of DOGE’s intervention believe that Musk’s track record in the aerospace industry uniquely positions him to lead meaningful change.

As DOGE personnel prepare for their visit, all eyes will be on the administration’s ability to balance innovation with safety. With mounting public pressure following recent aviation incidents, the push to overhaul air traffic control reflects the broader Trump administration agenda of reducing government inefficiencies and leveraging private-sector expertise to modernize federal operations.
