Ellen DeGeneres Admits She Fled U.S. Because of President Trump’s Re‑Election

Ellen DeGeneres confirmed today she relocated permanently to the United Kingdom following President Trump’s re‑election—a move she described as motivated by ideology, cultural values, and concerns over LGBTQ+ rights. In her first public address in the UK, DeGeneres praised the country’s social environment while warning that America may be “scary” for those who don’t conform.

At an event in Cheltenham on July 20, DeGeneres and her wife, Portia de Rossi, revealed they arrived in the Cotswolds just before the November 2024 U.S. election. After learning of Trump’s victory, she stated simply: “Yes”—confirming the decisive factor in their permanent move. DeGeneres lauded the U.K.’s cleaner environment, respectful culture, and animal welfare standards, noting, “Everything here is just better”.

Her decision also reflected deep anxiety over America’s religious and political direction. DeGeneres specifically referenced the Southern Baptist Convention’s recent resolution opposing same‑sex marriage, suggesting it placed her marriage in jeopardy. She disclosed the couple now plans to legally remarry in the U.K. should U.S. states revoke Obergefell protections.

While sharing reflections on her public image and career, DeGeneres admitted the toxic workplace scandal that concluded her U.S. talk show in 2022 still weighs on her reputation. She described herself as “direct,” not “mean,” and said the controversies made it difficult to return to American television.
