Egyptian Footballer Penalized for Refusing to Wear Gay Pride Armband During Match

Egyptian professional footballer Mostafa Mohammed has received a penalty for not wearing a gay pride rainbow flag on his arm during a match against Toulouse, National Pulse reports.

Mohammed currently playing for the French club Nantes.

The club announced on Monday, May 15, that they have imposed a fine on Mohammed, the specifics of which have not been revealed.

The proceeds of the fine will be directed to SOS Homophobia, a French LGBT charity.

This decision was sparked by an event that took place during the Sunday game, where all players across the top two French divisions, including team captains and officials, sported rainbow-coloured numbers on their jerseys and armbands.

This was part of a campaign to combat homophobia, coordinated by the French league, as reported by Insider Paper.

However, Mostafa Mohammed decided not to partake in this initiative, expressing his stance via a statement on his Twitter account.

“I respect all differences. I respect all beliefs and all convictions. This respect extends to others but my personal beliefs must be respected as well,” he asserted.

He further elaborated on his reasons for opting out of the campaign, referencing his cultural background and personal convictions.

“Given my roots, my culture, the importance of my convictions and beliefs, it was not possible for me to participate in this campaign. I hope my decision will be respected,” he concluded.
