Drag Queen Flamy Grant Welcomed by Virginia Church

Drag Queen Flamy Grant was welcomed at a Baptist church in Virginia.

Matthew Blake, who goes by the stage name “Flamy Grant,” is a Christian artist.

“A SHAME-SLAYING, HIP-SWAYING, SINGING-SONGWRITING QUEEN,” reads a description of the church event.

“The comedy queen with the blistering voice, Flamy Grant is a gospel & roots musician from the Bible Belt who will move you, soothe you, help you heal some trauma and always leave you laughing.”

“Flamy’s 2022 debut record Bible Belt Baby is the world’s first full-length contemporary Christian album by a drag performer — and a 2023 San Diego Music Award nominee for Best Pop Album. Flamy Grant recently hit number one on the iTunes Christian album charts, and her single, ‘Good Day’ featuring Derek Webb, charted at No. 20 on Billboard’s Christian Digital Song Sales,” the description continued.

The church accepted donations for Diversity Richmond, a “hub for the LGBTQ+ community of Greater Richmond that connects people, partners and programs through their work as a catalyst, a voice, a place and a resource.”

Blake’s album was recently removed from consideration for Best Contemporary Christian Album by The Recording Academy.

The album has been moved to the Pop category for the Grammy Awards.

In a statement to Rolling Stone, The Recording Academy said that the reason for the category shift is due to the swear words present in Grant’s music.

The organization explained that moving Christian music with swear words in it to non-Christian categories has been “standard practice.”
