A disturbing food tampering scare in Evansville, Indiana, has prompted a criminal investigation after viral doorbell footage appeared to show a DoorDash delivery driver pepper-spraying a customer’s Arby’s order. Authorities say the incident occurred early Sunday morning and left a local couple in severe pain shortly after eating their meal.
Doorbell video shows a woman with purple hair dropping off the food, taking a photo for delivery confirmation, and then discreetly spraying the bag with what appeared to be an irritant before walking away. Sheriff Noah Robinson confirmed Wednesday that the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office is now investigating. “The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a reported incident in which a food delivery driver allegedly sprayed an irritant substance onto a customer’s order before leaving the residence,” he said.
Robinson added that deputies responded to the home after the occupants became ill, reporting “burning sensations in their stomachs, throat, mouth, and nose.” Resident Mark Cardin said he and his wife only realized the food had been contaminated after she began choking and vomiting. “The bag had been tampered with,” he said, noting the video revealed the driver had acted “on purpose for some reason.”
Cardin described the ordeal as terrifying, saying, “It’s horrific… it could’ve been rat poison. It could’ve been fentanyl. I mean, my wife could’ve been dead.”
DoorDash confirmed the driver has been removed from the platform. “We have zero tolerance for this type of appalling behavior,” a spokesperson said.
The driver’s identity remains unconfirmed, and no arrests have been made.
