DOD Professes Necessity for ‘Diversity Equity and Inclusion’

Department of Defense launches campaign for Diversity Equity and Inclusion in the military.

QUICK FACTS:
  • A report from the Department of Defense outlines their plan to push ‘Diversity Equity and Inclusion’ (DEI) in their military recruiting.
  • According to Bishop Garrison, the senior advisor to the secretary of defense for human capital and diversity, equity, and inclusion, DEI is a “necessity” for the United States military.
  • Garrison said in a statement to the Center for a New American Security that progress is being made in his department to further diversify the military.
  • Currently, 41 percent of the military identify as members of minority groups, Garrison saying he wants to see people use DEI as a tool to solve problems.
  • Garrison believes that number will grow as the military attempts to attract minority members to “retain competitive edges.”
WHAT OFFICIALS SAID ABOUT THE DEI PUSH:
  • Garrison noted that the percentage of minorities drops further up the ranks, saying “Their numbers tend to begin to decline in terms of service; they tend to get out, and there could be a variety of reasons as to why that actually is.” “We need to take a very data-driven approach to get a better understanding as to what’s actually happening here. What is the problem? And how can we address it?
  • “I would hope that as many leaders and members of the total force as possible see [diversity, equity, and inclusion] efforts as a force multiplier,” he said, as he wants them to see the program as a way to make the U.S. military more successful in achieving critical missions and in making forces more lethal.
  • “It’s not just something that has to be done because of some type of cultural ideology or culture wars that are going on — that’s not the case at all. It is, again, not diversity for diversity’s sake,” Garrison said.
BACKGROUND:
  • The Heritage Foundation released a report in February of last year, showing the damaging effects of DEI in the workforce.
  • A second report in January of this year demonstrated how DEI created anti-Israel bias, along with several other devastating consequences.
