The American people should simply stop asking questions about whether COVID-19 leaked from a Chinese laboratory, according to a prominent medical journal editor who rushed to defend Dr. Anthony Fauci on national television this week.
Dr. Scott Ratzan, editor-in-chief of the Journal of Health Communication, appeared on CNN’s “NewsNight” following a heated Senate hearing on Wednesday, dismissing ongoing congressional investigations into the pandemic’s origins and Fauci’s response as nothing more than an “assault on science.”
“I think the reality is we shouldn’t be worrying about the lab leak theory today,” Ratzan declared, arguing instead that the nation should focus on building a “healthier America” rather than seeking accountability for where the deadly virus originated.
The Harvard-educated physician’s comments drew immediate pushback from conservative radio host Jason Rantz, who challenged Ratzan directly during the segment.
“You’re now saying that we shouldn’t talk about where COVID came from?” Rantz fired back.
Ratzan had leapt to Fauci’s defense moments earlier, painting the former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director as a victim of political persecution rather than a public official deserving of scrutiny.
“What’s happened is this is an assault on science and scientists,” Ratzan proclaimed. “And unfortunately, Dr. Fauci is in that seat, 38 years of service to the country, one of the best known scientists for infectious disease, unfortunately, has taken a lot of heat for probably a lot of, shall we say, issues that were not fully his.”
Ratzan offered no substantive response when Rantz contended that Fauci actively worked to suppress the theory that COVID escaped from a laboratory in Wuhan, China. The doctor simply dodged the origin question entirely, preferring to wave away the lingering mystery that has troubled millions of Americans who lost loved ones, jobs, and years of normal life to the pandemic.
“Today, we certainly didn’t learn anything from the way the hearing was held,” Ratzan added, dismissing the congressional probe altogether.
The fiery debate highlights the ongoing tension between those demanding answers about the pandemic’s origins and public health officials who appear eager to move past the question entirely. For many American families still grappling with the fallout from lockdowns, school closures, and economic devastation, being told to simply forget about accountability is a bitter pill to swallow.
