DHS Hires Lawform as Biden’s Secretary Mayorkas Faces Impeachment

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has taken steps to prepare for a potential impeachment of Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas by hiring outside counsel.

The department has signed a contract with New York-based law firm Debevoise & Plimpton.

The move comes after a second article of impeachment was filed by Arizona Republican Rep. Andy Biggs.

The DHS stated that it wants to ensure its “vital mission is not interrupted by the unprecedented, unjustified, and partisan impeachment efforts by some Members of Congress.”

The department also emphasized that it will continue to prioritize its work in protecting the country from terrorism, responding to natural disasters, and securing the borders while also responding to the numerous congressional committees and subcommittees that oversee DHS.

The law firm will assist DHS in responding to any eventual House inquiry.

Although Republicans have not yet taken any action on the resolutions, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and other GOP leaders have pledged what could be lengthy investigations ahead of a potential impeachment.

An agency official said that DHS does not have any staff with expertise in this matter and that the scale of legal assistance needed will depend on the GOP’s plans for its probe.

The department declined to provide further details on the retainer.

The last time a Cabinet official was impeached was in 1876 when Secretary of War William Belknap was impeached for accepting kickbacks.
