DeSantis Announces ‘Second Amendment Summer’

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) announced an initiative called the “Second Amendment Summer” tax holiday to allow Floridians to purchase firearms tax-free.

The tax holiday will run from Memorial Day to the Fourth of July.

“We are unveiling ‘Second Amendment Summer Tax Holiday,'” DeSantis said. “So from Memorial Day to the Fourth of July, you can get your ammunition, your firearms, and your accouterments tax-free in the state of Florida.”

The effort is part of his 2025-206 budget proposal called “Focus on Fiscal Responsibility.” The plan is expected to save state residents $8 million.

As a reporter asked if the state legislature might oppose the tax holiday, DeSantis said, “I think this is going to be wildly popular. Why would they want to fight back on that? This is something their voters would expect them to support.”

Brian Devito of The Tactical Store in Fort Pierce told local news outlets that the tax-free holiday is welcomed.

“I think if someone was tight on money and knew that if they came in the next month and I could save $42 or $50, they might wait,” Devito said. “In our industry, if our supplier or manufacturer has a sale, that enables us to have a sale, but without their support, it’s very difficult for us to do a sale.”

Cathy Swerdlow, chair of the gun violence action prevention team with the League of Women Voters, said, “What we really need is a tax holiday on gun safes and trigger locks, so that people who have guns can store them appropriately.”
