Democrats are intensifying their scrutiny of Elon Musk following his departure from the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Despite Musk’s efforts to reduce government waste, fraud, and abuse, Democratic lawmakers are signaling intentions to investigate his DOGE stint.
Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) stated, “Good riddance — but Musk isn’t off the hook for his chaos and corruption. We must hold him accountable.” Similarly, Representative Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) criticized Musk’s approach, saying, “Elon came to Washington thinking he could run the government like one of his companies — firing people left and right, gutting essential services, and tearing this [expletive] up from the ground up.” She added, “What he did is the definition of waste, fraud, and abuse. It’s time for a full investigation into the damage he’s caused and for the truth to come to light.”
Currently, Democrats lack the majority in Congress to issue subpoenas or schedule official hearings. However, they can request interviews and documents related to Musk’s activities during his time with DOGE. This dynamic could shift after the 2026 midterm elections if Democrats gain control of the House and Senate.
Republican lawmakers have praised Musk’s contributions. DOGE Subcommittee Chairwoman Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) remarked, “This should only be the beginning of cutting waste, fraud, and abuse and delivering government efficiency for the American people.”
Greene went on to thank Musk for his service in an X post. “Thank you [Elon Musk] for your incredible efforts and sacrifices you made to launch DOGE to save America from our national debt crisis,” she wrote.
As the political landscape evolves, the potential for investigations into Musk’s tenure with DOGE remains a contentious issue.
