Democrats Outraged McCarthy Sent Jan 6 Footage to Tucker Carlson

Democrats are concerned House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is giving hidden January 6 footage to Fox News host Tucker Carlson.

QUICK FACTS:
  • Democratic leaders and former members of the House select committee have warned that Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) providing Tucker Carlson with newly acquired January 6 footage presents a “security” risk to the country.
  • “The apparent transfer of video footage represents an egregious security breach that endangers the hardworking women and men of the United States Capitol Police,” House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) said Tuesday.
  • Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) also weighed in this week, saying McCarthy’s decision was “deeply dangerous and irresponsible.”
  • “If he has handed over sensitive security information, McCarthy is endangering Members, staff, institutional workers and Capitol Police heroes. He is also opening the floodgates for more disinformation about the deadly attack on our Democracy,” Pelosi’s spokesman Aaron Bennett wrote in an email.
  • “This move is the latest concession by McCarthy to appease the far-right in his conference, many of whom cheered on the insurrection,” Bennett continued. “There is a serious question as to whether Speaker McCarthy has the singular authority to release this footage.”
HOUSE SPEAKER KEVIN MCCARTHY ON RELEASING JAN 6 FOOTAGE TO THE PUBLIC:

“We watched the politicization of this,” McCarthy said. “I think the American public should actually see all what happened instead of a report that’s written for a political basis.”

BACKGROUND:
  • Last month, McCarthy told reporters that he intended to release all the security footage from the Capitol riots.
  • “I think the public should see what happened on that day. I watched what Nancy Pelosi did, where she politicized it. Where for the first time in the history as a Speaker, not allowing the minority to appoint to a committee,” McCarthy said at the time.
  • The newly elected House Speaker granted Carlson and his team surveillance footage from the day, including nearly 41,000 hours of video, Axios first reported on Monday.
