Democrats Admit Jan 6 Committee Hearings Are Used for Political Posturing

Democrats were quoted in the New York Times story.

QUICK FACTS:
  • The New York Times published a story seemingly drawing attention to the January 6 committee hearings, saying the committee uses theatrical techniques during their sessions.
  • The publication quoted several politicians and Democrat operatives who admitted that the hearings offer participants clout within their party.
  • “With their control of Congress hanging in the balance, Democrats plan to use made-for-television moments and a carefully choreographed rollout of revelations over the course of six hearings…to persuade voters that the coming midterm elections are a chance to hold Republicans accountable for it,” the Times reported.
  • The founder of the left-wing political consulting firm ASO Communications, Anat Shenker-Osorio, said the hearings might be useful in grabbing the attention of Democrats’ much-needed swing voters in November.
  • “Jan. 6 is very much salient and highly negative to these likely midterm voters,” Shenker-Osorio said.
LAWMAKERS’ STATEMENTS ABOUT THE COMMITTEE:
  • “When these hearings are over, voters will know how irresponsibly complicit Republicans were in attempting to toss out their vote and just how far Republicans will go to gain power for themselves,” New York Democratic Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney told the Times.
  • The committee appears dedicated to continuing its investigation into the alleged crimes by Jan. 6 detainees with Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) saying Monday on Twitter that “The House will fully expose the cult’s extreme effort to overthrow the U.S. government.”
BACKGROUND:
  • The Jan. 6 committee is slated to hold a prime time hearing Thursday that will “provide the American people with a summary of our findings about the coordinated, multi-step effort to overturn the 2020 presidential election,” according to a statement from the panel.
  • During that meeting, the committee said they will “previously unseen material documenting January 6th, receive witness testimony [and] preview additional hearings.”
