Democrat Governor Says Biden Admin Needs to ‘Take Ownership’ of the Migrant Crisis

On Wednesday, Democrat New York Governor Kathy Hochul pleaded for help from the federal government once again for the influx of migrants arriving in New York City.

Without directly blaming the Biden administration’s open-border policies, Hochul stated, “We really are looking for a federal response to this – to take ownership of a crisis and we’ll be there to help, but this belongs to the federal government.”

Even though Democrat leaders are urging the federal government to act, they continue to blame Republican leaders like Texas Governor Greg Abbott for busing immigrants to their self-proclaimed sanctuary cities.

The New York governor said she wants the administration to “see that this is a humanitarian crisis.”

In a press conference on Wednesday, Republican Rep. Lee Zeldin, Hochul’s opponent in the upcoming November gubernatorial race, called on the state’s sanctuary policies to be ended.

“There are sanctuary state policies that New York has that should be ended,” said Zeldin. “We saw it with the creation of a multibillion-dollar Excluded Workers Fund that was created. They raise taxes in order to pay for it.”

“There’s a Green Light Law that is in place that prevents federal law enforcement from being able to get access to DMV records. There was just an expansion of all Medicaid, where they’re now providing additional tax dollars to people who aren’t legally here,” he added.

The Biden administration has already provided New York City with a few million dollars to help cover the expense of creating emergency shelters for the surge of migrants. However, Mayor Eric Adams anticipated that the cost to house the migrants would surpass $1 billion by the end of the fiscal year.

During a press conference last week, Adams declared a state of emergency in New York City over the influx of migrants. He reported that the city receives approximately five to six buses a day from Texas.

“We are in a crisis situation,” said Adams. “New York City now has more than 61,000 in our shelter system.”

The city opened more than 40 emergency shelters to accommodate the flood of migrants seeking a place to stay. In the latest move to house the homeless, NYC officials plan to temporarily use a luxury hotel in midtown to provide shelter to 200 families.

On Wednesday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi admitted that the administration could be doing more to help New York but still blamed Texas Governor Abbott.

“Probably the most important thing that we can do is to be able to have people have a work permit,” Pelosi said. “And that would alleviate a lot of pressure on the community. But this is a highly controversial action that they have taken to just put people on a bus and send them someplace.”
