Freshman Democratic Rep. Dave Min (CA) ignited conservative outrage by requesting funding for illegal alien tips in his directed spending request. He seeks $1.6 million for Asian Americans Advancing Justice Southern California (AJSOCAL), a left-wing group that provides illegal alien tips and tactics to evade federal immigration agents.
Min, a former state senator in a swing district, aims to bolster AJSOCAL’s efforts—guides that counsel undocumented immigrants to avoid answering questions “related to where you were born” and to “DO NOT carry a foreign passport.” Republicans argue this request directly undermines law enforcement and taxpayer interests.
The funding bid comes amid heightened scrutiny of activist groups. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) backed the Chinese‑American Planning Council with $600,000 despite that organization facing investigation for similar instructions to undocumented individuals. Conservatives contend both Democrats are “standing with violent illegal criminals over Americans,” creating lines that energize Republican voters in next year’s elections.
House Republicans have already launched federal investigations. Rep. Josh Brecheen (R-OK) labeled Schumer’s support for ICE-evasion groups an attack on “our nation’s sovereignty and security.” Meanwhile, Min refers to his request as support for domestic violence survivors—a framing Republicans call a cynical cover for shielding undocumented immigrants.
