Connecticut Illegal Migrant Spending Reaches $1.3 Billion

A recent study by the conservative Yankee Institute reports that Connecticut has allocated $1.3 billion in taxpayer funds to support approximately 225,000 illegal migrants residing in the state. This expenditure equates to nearly $340 for each of the state’s 3.68 million residents. The funds cover services such as medical care, education, in-state tuition, incarceration, and welfare benefits.

Governor Ned Lamont disputes the report’s findings. However, Yankee Institute President Carol Platt Liebau emphasizes that the study’s data is based on accounting from the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR). Liebau states, “We welcome the opportunity to discuss with the Governor other ways to save taxpayer dollars.” She highlights that the $1.3 billion could significantly aid legally residing families and struggling businesses within Connecticut.

Republican state senators Rob Sampson, Eric Berthel, and Stephen Harding express alarm over the reported spending. In a joint statement, they question Governor Lamont’s stance, noting his previous declarations that all illegal aliens are “welcome” in Connecticut, including those with violent backgrounds. They argue that as long as Democrats control the State Capitol, taxpayers will continue to bear the $1.3 billion annual expense.

Connecticut Republican Party Chairman Ben Proto criticizes the allocation of substantial funds to support illegal migrants, especially given the state’s high cost of living. Proto points out that Connecticut residents face some of the nation’s highest electricity costs and property taxes. He contends that the $1.3 billion could be better utilized to provide economic relief to citizens, rather than funding programs that do not benefit taxpayers.

This debate occurs amid broader discussions about the state’s fiscal priorities and the impact of supporting illegal migrants on Connecticut’s economy and legal residents.
