Colorado School Educator Sentenced for Sexually Assaulting Special Needs Student, Introducing Him to Fentanyl

A former school employee in Colorado has been sentenced to four years in prison after being convicted of sexually assaulting a special needs student, exposing him to fentanyl, and soliciting him to commit violence against a coworker.

Imagine Kay Ewer, 28, received her sentence on January 31, which includes four years of incarceration followed by 10 years to life under Sex Offender Intensive Supervision Probation, according to the Colorado First Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

“Ultimately, the investigation revealed evidence of frequent sexual encounters, constant digital communication, inclusive of repeated derogatory remarks directed at the victim, and the introduction of drugs, alcohol, and weapons,” the news release said.

“The defendant preyed on my son, leading him to believe she genuinely cared for him, all while exploiting him for money and manipulating him into thinking he was ‘the one,’” the victim’s mother told the court. “What makes this even more painful is that I trusted the defendant had I known what was truly happening, I would never have allowed her such close access to him.”

Ewer, who worked for Jefferson County Public Schools from 2015 to 2023, held multiple roles, including school nurse, paraprofessional, and teaching assistant. At the time of her crimes, she was assigned as a paraprofessional in the special needs classrooms at Brady Exploration School near Denver, where she worked closely with a 16-year-old student from August to November 2023.

Authorities were alerted in November 2023 when a teacher noticed concerning writings on the victim’s worksheets. Investigators later discovered Ewer had been showing favoritism toward the teen and had initiated an inappropriate relationship as early as September.

Evidence revealed that she introduced the student to fentanyl and sent an alarming number of text messages—described as “thousands upon thousands upon thousands”—in which she urged the victim to bring a firearm to school and shoot another faculty member in the leg. She also requested that he bring a gun to their illicit encounters.

During her sentencing, Ewer expressed remorse, stating, *“I just want to apologize to the victim and the victim’s family. I’m really sorry. This will never happen again.”* The victim’s mother also addressed the court, detailing the profound impact Ewer’s crimes had on her family.
