Coast Guardsman Welcomed Home With Large Reception Days Before Christmas

A heartwarming military homecoming in Warminster took an unexpected turn as a young man, hoping to surprise his family for Christmas, was met with a surprise of his own.

The Viola family lawn was adorned with a welcome-home banner featuring 24-year-old Tyler Viola in his Coast Guard uniform. Tyler, returning from a year-long deployment in the Middle East, arrived to an emotional reception with a police escort and a crowd of family and friends waving American flags.

Adding a whimsical twist to the celebration, the family rented a camel to greet Tyler. “There’s a camel here?” he laughed, surprised by the gesture.

Tyler had originally planned to surprise his family by arriving a few days early, but his mom, Michele, caught wind of his plan and orchestrated a festive welcome to turn the tables on him.

Tyler’s father, Paul, expressed his pride and relief at having his son home. “We really are. It has been rough over there with everything going on in the Middle East. As parents, you know you are so worried,” he said.

Surrounded by loved ones near a fire pit, with Christmas lights twinkling and snow falling, Tyler embraced the warmth of family and the joy of the holiday season—a moment made even more magical by the creative and heartfelt effort of his family.

“I’m so grateful for everybody here and very surprised. I was not expecting this,” he said. He’s thankful for everyone who had a hand in this even though they foiled his plan.

“I am shocked. There is a camel on my front lawn. I was not expecting that one. That is pretty bizarre. It is good though,” said Tyler. His best friend since fourth grade drove him home from the airport.
