Catholic Hosts of ‘The View’ Criticize Pope Leo XIV’s Traditional Stances

Following the election of Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of Chicago, co-hosts of ABC’s “The View” expressed apprehension regarding his adherence to traditional Catholic teachings. Sunny Hostin, identifying as a devout Catholic, voiced concerns over the Pope’s past statements on LGBTQ+ issues. She referenced a 2012 address where he lamented “popular culture fostered and sympathy for beliefs and practices that are at odds with the gospel,” specifically citing the “homosexual lifestyle” and “alternative families comprised of same-sex partners and their adopted children.”

Hostin praised the late Pope Francis for his inclusive approach toward the LGBTQ+ community and expressed hope that Pope Leo XIV would not reverse such progress. Ana Navarro, another Catholic co-host, acknowledged the Pope’s initial message of inclusivity but noted the need to observe his actions moving forward.

Sara Haines, raised Presbyterian, added concerns about past allegations that Pope Leo XIV mishandled sexual abuse cases during his tenure in Peru and the United States. She questioned the decision of the conclave to overlook these issues during his election.

The hosts’ reactions highlight a tension between progressive expectations and traditional Catholic doctrine. Pope Leo XIV’s commitment to longstanding Church teachings may challenge the desires of those seeking further liberalization within the Church
