The Catholic League criticized Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat, accusing her of mocking the Eucharist in a recent Instagram video.
In the video, Whitmer places a Dorito chip on podcaster Liz Plank’s tongue, mimicking the Catholic Holy Communion ritual.
The video, set to the song “Dilemma” by Kelly Rowland, was intended to promote the CHIPS Act, a law supporting U.S. semiconductor production.
Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League, condemned the act as anti-Catholic bigotry, claiming it mocked a sacred religious practice.
“What Whitmer did was to deride Holy Communion,” Donahue said. “There is no wiggle room for her to deny the obvious.”
Donohue also announced plans to notify every Catholic parish in Michigan about the video.
“We are pulling out all stops on this one,” he continued. “We will blanket the Michigan media. We will contact every member of the Michigan legislature.”
