California Builds ‘Firewall’ of Protection Around Abortion Rights

Gov. Newsom said he wouldn’t allow the right of mothers to end their pregnancy to be taken from Californians.

QUICK FACTS:
  • California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) said Monday that he would build a “firewall” to protect the rights of Californians to abort their children, according to Breitbart News.
  • The government plans to make an amendment in the state’s constitution in light of the recent reports the Supreme Court might overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling that allowed for nationwide access to abortions.
  • Democrats have promised to “fight like hell” to keep abortion rights nationwide, as the Supreme Court considers whether both Roe and the more recent Casey v. Planned Parenthood verdicts should be vacated.
GOV. NEWSOM’S STATEMENT:

“California will not stand idly by as women across America are stripped of their rights and the progress so many have fought for gets erased. We will fight,” Newsome said. “California is proposing an amendment to enshrine the right to choose in our state constitution so that there is no doubt as to the right to abortion in this state. We know we can’t trust the Supreme Court to protect reproductive rights, so California will build a firewall around this right in our state constitution. Women will remain protected here.”
