The City Council of Huntington Beach, California passed an ordinance making the city a “Parents’ Right to Know City.”
The ordinance serves as a means of combatting a law that keeps parents’ from knowing their child’s gender identity at school.
California’s Assembly Bill 1955 prohibits “school districts, county offices of education, charter schools, and the state special schools, and a member of the governing board or body of those educational entities” from disclosing “any information related to a pupil’s sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression to any other person without the pupil’s consent unless otherwise required by law, as provided.”
According to the Los Angeles Times, Huntington Beach’s ordinance passed 4-3.
Legal group Liberty Justice Center said it is “encouraged by the leadership of Huntington Beach City Council in enacting an ordinance that declares Huntington Beach a ‘Parents’ Right to Know City.’”
“Parents are the legal guardians of their minor children and have the right to know what their children are doing at school. The vast majority of California voters across the political spectrum support parental rights. The Liberty Justice Center is proud to represent our clients in California for free and to support them in fighting for their individual rights and liberties as parents.”
Governor Gavin Newsom (D) signed AB 1955 into law in July.
At the time of the bill’s signing, Newsom spokesperson told the Associated Press, “This law helps keep children safe while protecting the critical role of parents. It protects the child-parent relationship by preventing politicians and school staff from inappropriately intervening in family matters and attempting to control if, when, and how families have deeply personal conversations.”
