California Affirms State Support for Taiwan

The California Senate adopted a bipartisan resolution supporting Taiwan. The resolution, honoring the 30th anniversary of Taiwan’s first direct presidential election and the 250th anniversary of the United States, calls for an expanded relationship between California and Taiwan.

“Taiwan now stands as California’s third largest trading partner, and Taiwan ranks as both the second largest goods import market and the third largest goods export market of California,” the resolution says, adding, “The Taiwanese American community has demonstrated remarkable resilience and steadfast commitment to democratic values, which has inspired innumerable people from the State of California and around the globe, especially those of Taiwanese heritage.”

A similar resolution was introduced in the California House in May. It read that “generations of Taiwanese Americans have helped make America what it is today, more innovative, more competitive, and more secure.”

“Taiwanese Americans play an integral role in strengthening the close and enduring partnership between the United States and Taiwan, serving as a vital bridge that promotes people-to people ties and shared prosperity,” the resolution added.

Last month, Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao said the United States is pausing a $14 billion arms sale to Taiwan in the wake of the conflict with Iran. “Right now we’re doing a pause in order to make sure we have the munitions we need for Epic Fury, which we have plenty,” He added, “But, we’re just making sure we have everything, then the foreign military sales will continue when the administration deems necessary.”
