C.D.C. Withholding COVID Data to ‘Prevent Vax Hesitancy’

The New York Times released a report stating that the CDC intentionally withheld data about the coronavirus pandemic so that the American people would be more willing to receive the COVID-19 vaccinations.

QUICK FACTS:
  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is found to have been withholding data about COVID-19 due to concerns that Americans might decide not to get the vaccine, according to Summit News.
  • The New York Times reported that the CDC has been collecting data on hospitalizations and breaking it down by race, age, and vaccination status.
  • They have chosen to keep the data secret and have published “only a tiny fraction of the data,” a full two years into the public health crisis, according to the Times.
  • A spokesperson for the CDC said the agency has been reluctant to release the data because it was “not yet ready for prime time.” The agency also said that their “priority when gathering any data is to ensure that it’s accurate and actionable.”
  • The Times cited one watchdog group that called the CDC “a political organization as much as it is a public health organization,” in response to the news of the information withholding.
SUBHEMORE INFO FROM THE TIMES:
  • “Much of the withheld information could help state and local health officials better target their efforts to bring the virus under control. Detailed, timely data on hospitalizations by age and race would help health officials identify and help the populations at highest risk,” the Times reported in their expose
  • “Information on hospitalizations and death by age and vaccination status would have helped inform whether healthy adults needed booster shots. And wastewater surveillance across the nation would spot outbreaks and emerging variants early.”
BACKGROUND:
  • CDC director Rochelle Walensky previously admitted that the agency’s COVID-19 guidance was based on what the government believed people would accept.
  • Walensky also acknowledged last month that over 75% of COVID deaths were people “who had at least four comorbidities” and were “unwell to begin with.”
