Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg said he agrees with his spouse, who claimed the recently-signed parents’ rights bill in Florida would “kill kids.”
During a panel discussion on “The View” Friday, co-host Ana Navarro asked Buttigieg about “attacks on LGBTQ plus” and whether he agreed with his husband, Chasten, a teacher who alleged that the so-called “Don’t Say Gay” law would result in the deaths of children.
“Do you agree?” Navarro asked. “And, you know, as a politician because this strikes you as, you know, your husband is a teacher. You are obviously LGBTQ yourself, and you are now a parent. So how do you feel?”
“Yeah, he’s right, and I think every law ought to be judged for the effect it’s going to have on real people in real life,” Buttigieg replied. “And I get the political reasons why they’re doing this. By the way, some of those political reasons, is they don’t have a plan on anything else, right? They don’t have a plan on dealing with inflation or dealing with gas prices or dealing with the issues of …”
Navarro interjected and said people in Florida reportedly “can’t get home insurance” as she claimed “they,” without specifying who “they” is, are “banning all sorts of conversations.”
The secretary said it’s “easier politically, but this is going to hurt people.”
“I think about it and Chasten and I talk about this a lot,” Buttigieg shared. “If our kids were in a classroom in a state where one of these laws passed.”
He then claimed the law would prohibit his kids from talking about what they did over the weekend with their two dads, and did not seem to comprehend that it does not apply to high school settings.
“Is the teacher supposed to, you know, a high school teacher supposed to go through every book and make sure that if there’s ever a picture of married couples in those books they tear out any page where it isn’t a straight couple?” Buttigieg added. “Is that what we’re asking teachers to do?”
As previously reported by The Daily Wire, the Parents’ Rights in Education law in Florida applies only to kindergarten through third grade kids and has nothing to do with high school. It “bans classroom instruction on gender identity and sexual orientation” for children in those grades only.
