A recent poll suggests that British voters overwhelmingly support several key elements of former U.S. President Donald Trump’s agenda, even without knowing their origin. The survey, conducted by Opinium, polled 2,000 British voters and revealed broad support for Trump-inspired policies, offering potential lessons for UK leaders.
One of the most striking results showed 58% of respondents backing the declaration of a national “border emergency” in the English Channel, mirroring Trump’s approach to securing the U.S. southern border. Only 25% opposed the measure. Additionally, 55% supported a Trump-style energy policy aimed at reducing prices, increasing domestic reserves, and exporting energy to bolster the nation’s wealth.
In a direct challenge to the Labour government’s environmental agenda, a plurality of voters called for an “end to net zero,” the climate change initiative championed by Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Similarly, 56% favored imposing tariffs to protect UK industries and workers, reflecting Trump’s “America First” approach to trade.
The poll also revealed strong support for cultural and social policies. A majority, 53%, backed a return to a “merit-based, color-blind society,” while the same percentage supported ending government censorship and promoting free speech. On gender issues, 51% of respondents agreed with only recognizing two genders—male and female—as proposed in Trump’s recent statements.
These findings highlight a significant disconnect between British voters and the current government’s progressive policies. Gavin Davis of the advisory firm Nepean noted the results reflect a shift in public opinion. “Whether you like Trump or not, this research shows the danger of simply dismissing many of his policies out of hand,” Davis said.
The survey’s results align closely with the platform of Nigel Farage’s Reform Party, which has recently gained traction in the UK. Farage’s populist movement, echoing Trump’s agenda, has surged in popularity, topping national polls for the first time last week.
