Democrat governors and attorney generals have launched an organization designed to resist President-elect Donald Trump’s agenda.
Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and Colorado Governor Jared Polis announced Governors Safeguarding Democracy, a group described as a “nonpartisan alliance of governors that works together to uphold and fortify American democracy.”
“We strengthen the foundations of American democracy by catalyzing collaboration across state lines,” the organization’s website says. “Working together, we leverage the collective strength, experience, and institutional knowledge in governors’ offices across the country to craft laws and policies that protect the rule of law and serve the people of our great states.”
Pritzker told Axios that the effort pushes back against “increasing threats of autocracy fortifying the institutions of democracy that our country and our states depend upon.”
Polis added that the group will fight against “any threats to our democracy that come from any president or from foreign powers.”
California Governor Gavin Newsom similarly announced an effort to “safeguard California values and fundamental rights in the face of an incoming Trump administration.”
Newsom called for a special legislative session to begin on December 2 that will focus on bolstering California legal resources to protect civil rights, reproductive freedom, climate action, and immigrant families. This is the first of several actions by the Newsom Administration, in partnership with the Legislature, as the Governor begins shoring up California’s defenses against an incoming federal administration that has threatened the state on multiple fronts, according to a news release.
