Black Farmers Sue Biden Over Failed Debt Relief Promise

Black farmers have taken legal action against the Biden administration after failing to follow through with its debt relief promise.

QUICK FACTS:
  • Black farmers are suing President Biden over broken promises on helping with debt relief as thousands risk foreclosure on their land.
  • President of the National Black Farmers Association, John Boyd Jr., says the administration has failed farmers of color, claiming “these are some of the hardest economic times in history” for farmers due to record high inflation.
  • “This administration has let down America’s Black farmers and other farmers of color,” Boyd Jr. said. “Here we are with promised debt relief to the tune of 120%, and I’ve been trying to meet with President Biden about this.”
  • In July 2021, Biden promised Boyd Jr. to have a meeting to discuss the debt that the President never followed through
  • “The administration repealed it… and we see it as a broken contract between Black and other farmers of color and a broken promise on behalf of this president to not deliver for a body of people who certainly delivered for him,” Boydd Jr. added.
PRESIDENT OF THE NATIONAL BLACK FARMERS ASSOCIATION ON BIDEN FAILING TO PROVIDE AID TO BLACK FARMERS:

“Right now the administration has failed to meet that need and they haven’t stepped up to the plate to save these farmers from foreclosure,” Boyd Jr. argued.

BACKGROUND:
  • In July 2022, John Boyd Jr. issued a warning to President Biden concerning the dire consequences inflation was causing for farmers in the country.
  • “You have the high cost of fuel, the high cost of fertilizer and lime and all of these upfront costs for America’s farmers, and we haven’t done anything in place to fix that,” Boyd Jr. explained at the time.
  • “We’re heading for a food shortage in this country where you have different regions of the world, such as Ukraine, that won’t be producing enough commodities such as corn, wheat and soybeans. All of these things are going to affect us here at home, and we’re going to see empty food shelves in the coming months,” he continued.
