Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates is set to appear before the House Oversight Committee in June as part of its investigation into the activities of Jeffrey Epstein.
A spokesperson for Gates said in a statement obtained by The Hill that he “welcomes the opportunity to appear before the committee.”
“While he never witnessed or participated in any of Epstein’s illegal conduct, he is looking forward to answering all the committee’s questions to support their important work,” the spokesperson said.
Gates has been listed in several emails exposed under the Epstein files, one of which pertained to a sexually transmitted disease. In another email, Epstein claimed he helped Gates “get drugs” to “deal with consequences of sex with [R]ussian girls.”
Gates has since apologized to employees of the Gates Foundation regarding his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. The Wall Street Journal obtained a recording from Gates, which features him stating he did “nothing illicit,” and saw “nothing illicit” during his time with Epstein. “I did have affairs, one with a Russian bridge player who met me at bridge events, and one with a Russian nuclear physicist who I met through business activities,” he said.
“To be clear I never spent any time with victims, the women around him,” Gates said, as per the WSJ report. “It was a huge mistake to spend time with Epstein … I apologize to other people who are drawn into this because of the mistake that I made.”Gates reportedly told employees that he spent time with Epstein in Germany, France, Washington, and New York, although he claimed he never visited the island or “stayed overnight.”
