Numerous Republicans are calling for Joe Biden to resign as U.S. President following the end of his reelection campaign.
Republican Vice President nominee J.D. Vance declared on social media, “If you can’t run, you can’t serve,” adding, “He should resign now.”
House Speaker Mike Johnson similarly said in a statement, “Having invalidated the votes of more than 14 million Americans who selected Joe Biden to be the Democrat nominee for president, the self-proclaimed ‘party of democracy’ has proven exactly the opposite.”
“If Joe Biden is not fit to run for President, he is not fit to serve as President,” he added. “He must resign the office immediately. November 5 cannot arrive soon enough.”
The sentiment was also expressed by Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO), Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC), and others.
Donald Trump took to Truth Social to declare Biden unfit for office.
“Who is running our Country right now?” Trump asked. “It’s not Crooked Joe, he has no idea where he is. If he can’t run for office, he can’t run our Country!!!”
White House spokesperson Andrew Bates said in a statement that Biden will finish the remainder of his term, however.
“He looks forward to finishing his term and delivering more historic results for the American people,” Bates said. “That includes continuing to lower costs, create jobs and protect Social Security while standing against the MAGAnomics agenda that would worsen inflation and drive us into recession. And he’ll keep fighting to protect Americans’ freedom from radical abortion bans and attacks on the rule of law.”
