Biden Threatens to Uphold Abortion with ‘Executive Orders’ if Roe v. Wade Is Overturned

Biden said the country won’t stand for abortion restrictions.

QUICK FACTS:
  • Joe Biden said that he is looking into using an executive order to protect abortion access if Roe v. Wade is overturned.
  • Biden’s comments came while talking on comedian Jimmy Kimmel’s show this week about the violent, life-ending procedure that has claimed the lives of more than 60 million Americans since the 1970s.
  • The nation’s leader said that the idea of canceling abortion rights was “just ridiculous,” and that he doesn’t believe America will put up with it.
  • Biden told Kimmel, “I don’t think the country will stand for it, and I think what we’re going to have to do, there are some executive orders I could employ, we believe. We’re looking into that right now.”
  • Frustration about the Supreme Court’s potential decision reached new levels when a man was arrested and charged with attempting to assassinate Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
BIDEN’S COMMENTS ON THE FUTURE OF ABORTION:
  • Biden said in his interview with Kimmel that when the decision for Roe v. Wade was written, its author, Harry Blackmun, admitted that he thought it would likely cause a “mini-revolution,” before moving on to talk about possible legislative options for abortion supporters.
  • Biden said he thought it would be necessary for Congress to legislate the issue: “We have to make sure we pass legislation making it a law that is, ‘The federal government says this is how it works,'” he said.
  • “If they overrule Roe v. Wade, and the state of California won’t do it, but other states say, ‘You cannot do the following, and it’s a law you can’t cross the border’ – all the things that some states have – then you got to make sure you vote. You got to vote and let people know what the devil you think.”
BACKGROUND:
  • A decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization is expected as early as next week, causing apprehensions over what is expected to be upheaval and possibly violence over the decision.
  • The Department of Homeland Security issued a terrorism threat bulletin earlier in the week, citing the potential for the decision to prompt violence against faith-based institutions, schools, racial and religious minorities, government facilities and personnel, and U.S. critical infrastructure.
