Biden Drops Out of 2024 Presidential Race

President Joe Biden announced Sunday that he will be suspending his presidential re-election campaign.

“While it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” Biden wrote in a letter posted on X. “I will speak to the Nation later this week in more detail about my decision.”

The decision comes as Biden continued to face criticism and calls for him to step down.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom said that Biden “has been an extraordinary, history-making president — a leader who has fought hard for working people and delivered astonishing results for all Americans.”

“He will go down in history as one of the most impactful and selfless presidents,” Newsom said.

Earlier this month, Newsom claimed he would “never” turn his back on Biden and run for president.

“If it comes to an open convention, will you run?” the reporter asked.

“No, I mean it’s not even…” Newsome began, before the reporter interjected, “Absolutely not?”

“That’s not even, it’s to me, it’s the hypothetical that gets in the way of progress in terms of promoting this candidacy,” he said.

“That’s a legit question, but it’s exactly where the other party wants us to be is having this internal fight,” the governor added. “And I think it’s extraordinarily unhelpful. Said that literally the second after the debate. It was my first public comment. So I’ve been consistent in this belief, not just privately, but publicly.”
