Australian Prime Minister Claims Australians Gave Consent to Mass Vaccination

Australia’s Prime Minister Scott Morrison claims that Australians gave consent for mass vaccinations, saying his people were allowed to make a choice about their vaccination status, in contradiction to past statements and local government actions.

QUICK FACTS:
  • Australia’s prime minister received pushback after he attempted to claim that Australians were allowed to decide whether or not they wanted to get the COVID-19 vaccinations, according to The National File.
  • The land down under has had some of the strictest COVID-19 policies, with residents struggling to function at any level without vaccination
  • In the summer of 2021, the state of Victoria’s premier told workers that they “won’t work” if they weren’t vaccinated, whether in the city or rural areas.
  • Morrison, however, noted that the government allowed for residents to consult with doctors about vaccination before taking the shot, stressing that individuals were allowed to make their decisions when faced with data pointing to deaths connected to the mRNA shots.
WHAT THE PRIME MINISTER SAID:
  • “We’re all responsible for our own health. When it comes to informed consent and giving consent to whatever treatment procedure you may have or I may have, then I’m ultimately responsible for what people do in their health treatment to me,” Morrison said.
  • He then noted that government-funded opportunities were available for Australians to consult with a physician regarding vaccination, saying, “The informed consent process provides the decision to the individual. That’s the sort of country we live in, people make their own decisions about their own health and their own bodies.”
BACKGROUND:
  • Morrison backed the idea of compulsory vaccination as early as August of 2020, after Australia had been shut down, which separated family members who were out of the country when the order came down.
  • Morrison told Melbourne radio station 3AW that medical exemptions would be allowed, but only with the understanding that the pandemic “has destroyed the global economy and taken the lives of hundreds of thousands all around the world.”
  • He later walked back his hardline stance on vaccines, saying that a mandate similar to the American OSHA mandate is not something he would pursue.
  • However, in October of last year, Victoria Premier Dan Andrews told workers that they “won’t work” if they refuse to get the jab. “Every single authorized worker, whether they be in Melbourne or in regional Victoria, will need to have had at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. That is if they want to continue working,” he said.
