Armed Citizen Shoots an alleged assaulter in Hardeeville, South Carolina, and they were killed on Monday night. The incident occurred around 9:38 p.m. when police responded to a report of an armed man attempting to force a victim out of their car at gunpoint, according to WSAV.
Witnesses provided police with details on the suspect’s direction after the attempted carjacking. Shortly thereafter, gunshots were heard. Officers arrived at the scene to find two men, one of whom had been shot and was pronounced dead.
On Tuesday, the Hardeeville Police Department (HPD) issued a statement regarding the shooting:
“Detectives with the Hardeeville Police Department continue to investigate this incident. Initial evidence and investigative information caused detectives to suspect the deceased subject in this case was actively involved in attempted armed assaults on potential victims when he encountered an armed citizen who protected himself.”
WSAV noted that the suspect was believed to be “a suspected multiple offender.” Authorities are continuing to investigate the case to determine if the deceased was involved in other criminal activities prior to the fatal encounter.
South Carolina law permits the use of force in self-defense under its Stand Your Ground statute, allowing law-abiding citizens to protect themselves if they are facing an imminent threat. While investigations are ongoing, initial findings suggest the armed citizen acted in lawful self-defense against a violent assailant.
Local authorities are urging witnesses to come forward with any additional information as they work to complete their investigation.
The shooting has reignited discussions about the importance of self-defense rights and concealed carry laws in South Carolina. Supporters argue that cases like this highlight the necessity of responsible gun ownership, while critics caution about the potential for misuse of such laws.
