Arkansas Gov. Bans Term ‘Latinx’ from Government Documents

In an executive order issued on her first day in office, Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders has banned the use of the term “Latinx” in official government documents and employee titles, Fox News reported Tuesday.

The term, which is favored by some progressives as a gender-neutral alternative to the Spanish words “Latino” and “Latina,” has been met with mixed reactions within the Hispanic community.

According to polls, only 2% of Hispanics use the term, with 40% stating that it offends them.

The executive order states, “Ethnically insensitive and pejorative language has no place in official government documents or government employee titles.

The government has a responsibility to respect its citizens and use ethnically appropriate language, particularly when referring to ethnic minorities.”

In addition to the ban on the use of the term “Latinx,” Governor Huckabee Sanders has ordered that all state offices, departments, and agencies must review existing government documents and submit written reports on their findings.

Within 60 days of the signing of the executive order, all state offices, departments, and agencies will be required to revise written materials by replacing “Latinx” with terms such as “Hispanic,” “Latino,” and “Latina.”
