Apple Rolls Out Digital ID

Apple announced the launch of its Digital ID on November 12 to be used at TSA checkpoints for identity verification during domestic travel.

According to the company, Digital ID provides for Apple users a “way to create and present an ID in Apple Wallet even if they do not have a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or state ID.” The company noted that the tool is not to be used as a replacement for a physical passport and cannot be used for international travel.

“With the launch of Digital ID, we’re excited to expand the ways users can store and present their identity — all with the security and privacy built into iPhone and Apple Watch,” said Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s Vice President of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet. “Since introducing the ability to add a driver’s license or state ID to Apple Wallet in 2022, we’ve seen how much users love having their ID right on their devices. Digital IDs brings this secure and convenient option to even more users across the country, as they can now add an ID to Wallet using information from their U.S. passport.”

Apple further explained: “Your Digital ID data is encrypted. Apple can’t see when and where you use your Digital ID, and biometric authentication using Face ID and Touch ID helps make sure that only you can view and use your Digital ID.”

The United Kingdom rolled out a plan for digital identification in September. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said of the plan, “Digital ID is an enormous opportunity for the UK. It will make it tougher to work illegally in this country, making our borders more secure. And it will also offer ordinary citizens countless benefits, like being able to prove your identity to access key services swiftly – rather than hunting around for an old utility bill.”

Swiss voters also approved the introduction of digital identity cards on September 28.
