Apple Wanted China—Trump Dragged It Back to America

President Trump announced a landmark deal in partnership with Apple on August 6, securing the tech giant’s fresh $100 billion commitment to boost U.S. manufacturing. That pledge raises Apple’s total planned investment in American operations to $600 billion over the next four years, including new production of critical components and advanced manufacturing facilities.

Apple CEO Tim Cook joined Trump at a White House press event to highlight the company’s new “American Manufacturing Program.” The initiative includes making all iPhone and Apple Watch cover glass at Corning’s Kentucky facility and expanding AI server production in Houston, Texas. It aims to create tens of thousands of jobs and strengthen national economic and security infrastructure.

The announcement follows mounting pressure from the Trump administration, including threats of steep tariffs on foreign-made iPhones. Apple faces potential 25% levies on products assembled overseas. Analysts note the investment may partly serve to mitigate these trade risks, though critics argue it largely repackages existing domestic spending rather than guaranteeing significant shifts in final assembly locations.

Wall Street welcomed the development, with Apple’s stock climbing about 5% during Wednesday’s trading. This signals investor optimism that re-shoring promises may bring tariff relief and stabilize supply chain concerns.

Despite applause from America First advocates, observers caution that most Apple devices are still manufactured overseas. A complete shift to domestic iPhone production remains cost-prohibitive, with some estimates suggesting U.S.-assembled iPhones could reach $3,500 per unit and require years to implement at scale.

Nonetheless, Trump hailed the move as a clear victory for U.S. manufacturing and economic sovereignty. White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers emphasized the investment aligns with the administration’s broader effort to protect critical industries and re-shore jobs.
