Andy Burnham has officially been declared the United Kingdom’s next prime minster, becoming leader of Britain’s Labour Party.
“It’s the honour of my life to be Leader of the Labour Party,” he wrote on X. “I will be a leader for every region and nation in this great country, and this Party will be unashamedly Labour in our priorities and in the decisions we take.”
“Together, we will set Britain on a new path.”
Upon delivering a victory speech, Burnham expressed that his mission is to “bring back hope.”
“I am for us, for all of us,” he said.
Burnham will take office next week.
Outgoing UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation last month. “The question my party is asking now is whether I am best placed to lead us into the next general election. I have heard the answer of my parliamentary party to that question, and I accept that answer with good grace,” he said, adding, “I will ask the National Executive Committee of the Labour Party to set out a timetable with nominations opening on 9 July and completed by the summer recess. In the case of a contest, this will ensure a new leader is in place before Parliament returns in September.”
No one ran against Burnham.
President Trump has called Burnham “extremely liberal.” When asked what he knew of Burnham, he told reporters, “I don’t know, I think I see that he was, I guess, the mayor of a town. I hear he’s extremely liberal, extremely, so that means he probably won’t open up the North Sea.”
