Amazon’s Ring Doorbell Camera Spied on Customers

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) said in a court filing that a former employee of Amazon’s Ring doorbell camera branch spied on female customers in 2017.

FTC said Ring employees had unrestricted access to customers’ video footage.

An updated policy from 2019 stated that Ring employees could only access video with the customer’s consent.

Amazon is to pay $5.8 million for Ring violations and another $25 million for Alexa privacy violations after children’s data failed to be deleted.

Reporting from Reuters:

FTC Commissioner Alvaro Bedoya told Reuters the settlements should send a message to tech companies that their need to collect data was not an excuse to break the law. "This is a very clear signal to them," he said.
