Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced plans to invest up to $50 billion in artificial intelligence and supercomputing infrastructure tailored for U.S. government agencies. The investment will begin in 2026 and aims to provide a significant upgrade in computing power through secure cloud regions, including Top Secret, Secret, and GovCloud classifications.
The infrastructure buildout will support a total of 1.3 gigawatts of new computing capacity. This effort is designed to bolster federal agencies’ ability to handle complex operations, from cybersecurity to national defense and public health research. AWS confirmed that these enhancements will provide government users with access to platforms like Amazon SageMaker for training AI models and Amazon Bedrock for deploying generative AI applications.
According to AWS, the new infrastructure will also include support for foundation models such as Amazon’s own “Nova” and models developed by Anthropic, an AI safety-focused company backed by Amazon. These technologies are intended to help agencies automate workloads, analyze large data sets, and improve decision-making processes with real-time intelligence.
The investment marks one of the largest commitments by a private company to support federal technology modernization. By targeting mission-critical agencies, AWS aims to eliminate legacy IT constraints that have limited government adoption of advanced AI tools. The upgrades are expected to streamline operations across departments, making them more secure, efficient, and responsive.
In addition to the infrastructure, AWS said that a portion of the funds would be used to develop workforce training and job creation related to the deployment and management of AI systems. This initiative may provide career pathways for American workers in a rapidly advancing technological sector.
