A Senate committee has approved the “AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act,” which mandates that all new vehicles include AM radio capabilities at no additional cost. This bipartisan legislation responds to concerns over some automakers, particularly electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers, excluding AM radio from their models due to electromagnetic interference issues.
Proponents emphasize AM radio’s critical role in disseminating emergency alerts and information during natural disasters, highlighting its inclusion in the Emergency Alert System (EAS). Senator Ed Markey (D-MA) stated, “With hurricane season in full swing, it has never been more important to pass the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act and ensure that this life-saving communication tool remains in vehicles.”
Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) argued in favor of this piece of legislation, specifically for its use during natural disasters.
“I like the notion that we are going to have good old-fashioned AM radio and car radios. I just think that we need to continue to have emergency response. The consequences are as devastating as some of the major events in Louisiana and the South. So, I hope that we will do something that thinks outside the box on how to keep communication going and not just respond to some of the requests by people that think that the digital solution is just the only solution,” Cantwell stated.
The bill requires automakers to maintain AM broadcast radio in their vehicles without imposing additional fees. Manufacturers that have already removed AM radio must inform customers of alternative options. Non-compliance could result in penalties from the Department of Transportation and potential civil lawsuits from the Department of Justice.
Some automakers, including Tesla, Polestar, and Rivian, have excluded AM radio from their EVs, citing electromagnetic interference from electric drivetrains that can cause signal distortion. However, the legislation underscores the necessity of AM radio for public safety, aiming to ensure its continued availability in all vehicles.
AM radio provides a reliable source of news and information, particularly in rural areas with limited internet access. With streaming services and satellite radio becoming more common, some question whether AM broadcasting remains essential in modern vehicles.
