QUICK FACTS:
  • Ninety-two-year-old George Soros has passed the Open Society Foundation onto his 37-year-old son Alexander.
  • Alexander, who goes by Alex, has claimed to be even “more political” than his father.
  • “As much as I would love to get money out of politics, as long as the other side is doing it, we will have to do it, too,” Alexander said in an interview, referring to donations towards the 2024 presidential election.
  • Alex told the Financial Times, through a spokesperson, “We are going to double down on defending voting rights and personal freedom at home and supporting the cause of democracy abroad.”
  • When discussing U.S. politics, Alex said, “Our side has to be better about being more patriotic and inclusive. Just because someone votes Trump doesn’t mean they’re lost or racist.”
  • George Soros originally claimed he “didn’t want the foundation to be taken over by one of my children,” but has since said that Alex has “earned it.”
ALEXANDER’S PREVIOUS INVOLVEMENT WITH THE OPEN SOCIETY FOUNDATION:
  • Alexander Soros worked part-time at OSF between 2004 and 2006, joining the group’s board in 2011.
  • “Alex used to come to board meetings, but he hardly spoke,” said the foundation’s former president Aryeh Neier.
  • Alex began working full-time for the foundation in 2015, taking on a larger role following the 2016 election.
  • In December, the OSF board placed Alex as its chairman, who also directs activities for the Soros super PAC, Democracy PAC.
  • According to some, Alex conducts aspects of business differently than his father, reportedly holding a notebook and noting details that would otherwise go unnoticed.
