Actress Jameela Jamil opened up a can of furious nonsense when she told people that putting their pronouns in their profiles wasn’t good enough after she misgendered a critic.
Jamil apologized for misgendering someone who criticized and said she didn’t have time to look at profiles when firing back on social media.
“I accidentally misgendered someone who was rude to me on here because I did not know they were NB. I instantly corrected myself but NOBODY reads your bios people,” Jamil wrote.
“*PLEASE* include your pronouns in your name on here to prevent misunderstandings/offense if it’s important to you,” she added.
“OBVIOUSLY sorry for making this innocent mistake,” Jamil said in a second tweet. “But if we don’t do more to prevent this mistake it will likely keep happening, which is bad for everyone. Put pronouns in your names. I’ve just done that with mine. It took two seconds.”
Jamil’s suggestion was met with bitter scorn by some in the LGBTQ community.
“You have zero right or footing to tell trans people how to clearly state their identity or pronouns. if you want to reply to someone or call them out or whatever, the least you can do to respect their pronouns is click on the profile you’re about to tweet at or subtweet,” replied one person who identified as bi-sexual.
“It isn’t an innocent mistake when you continuously misgender and double down on what you said. f*** off with that performative activism,” read another tweet.
“Why are you centering yourself in this conversation? youre not the one who got misgendered,” responded another user.
“Im glad that you’re apologizing, but you’re putting the blame on the person you misgendered by saying they aren’t presenting the information in a way that works best for you. If you want to be an ally, then own the blame fully yourself and take an extra second to check the bio,” said a person identifying as trans.
“It’s literally not their fault if you didn’t read their bio, stop blaming them for your carelessness,” read another popular tweet.
The outspoken actress has previously made headlines for saying that her life was more important than an unborn fetus. She also tweeted in April that she was leaving Twitter permanently after Elon Musk entered into negotiations to buy the social media platform.
Jamil is best known for her role in the NBC series “The Good Place” and as a supervillain in Disney’s “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law,” series.
