Accused UnitedHealthcare CEO Murder Suspect Waives Extradition

The 26-year-old man accused in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson has waived extradition from Pennsylvania and is set to return to New York as early as Thursday.

Luigi Mangione was arrested on December 9 at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, following a five-day manhunt. He faces charges for the December 4 shooting death of Thompson, 50, outside a midtown Manhattan hotel. Mangione has also pleaded not guilty to multiple charges in Pennsylvania.

If a Pennsylvania judge accepts the waiver during a scheduled hearing Thursday morning, New York City police will transport Mangione to New York for arraignment, which could happen as soon as Thursday.

“I’m ready to bring him back here and make sure justice is served,” New York Gov. Kathy Hochul stated Wednesday.

A Manhattan grand jury has indicted Mangione on several charges, including first-degree murder in the furtherance of terrorism, second-degree murder, and multiple counts of criminal possession of a weapon. He also faces a charge for possession of a forged instrument.
