President Trump announced that the largest steel plant in the nation’s history is set to come to Iowa. The $15 billion plan is expected to bring 1,750 jobs to the state.
Sharing the plan from the Oval Office, President Trump said, “Today, we’re thrilled to announce that Mesabi Metallics will be building the largest steel plant in American history in the great state of Iowa.” He explained that the plant will produce 10 million tons of steel a year.
“Soon after my inauguration, I imposed powerful 50% tariffs on all foreign steel — and now, our steel industry is roaring back to life,” he added.
According to the White House, such an initiative was blocked by Democrats for years. “The Obama Administration blocked a proposed northern Minnesota copper-nickel mine by denying its federal lease renewals in 2016. The Biden Administration canceled those same leases in 2022, then banned mining for 20 years across 225,504 acres of the Superior National Forest,” the statement explained. The former White House administration also pulled a federal water permit for a copper-nickel mine, in addition to blocking a road in Alaska that would have opened a copper and cobalt area.
“One of the largest steel plants in American history is coming to Iowa,” Zach Lahn, Iowa’s Republican gubernatorial candidate, wrote on X. “Nearly 2000 manufacturing jobs & the highest quality steel made in Iowa. This is a direct result of focusing on building in America. Iowa is the best place to do just that.”
“Looking forward to working with President Trump to get this plant fully online,” he said.
