A judge ordered New York City officials to hand over communications surrounding rent freezes as landlords allege Mayor Zohran Mamdani improperly influenced the freeze as part of his socialist agenda.
The Rent Guidelines Board passed a rent freeze for one-year and two-year leases in June, a move that allowed Mamdani to declare that he fulfilled one of his socialist goals.
According to New York State Supreme Court Justice Brendan Lantry, “The question naturally arises: How would the Mayor comply with his ‘guarantee’ to the voters to ‘freeze’ the rent unless he, or his staff, communicated with the Board to ensure that the Board refrained from imposing any rental increase?”
“The court acknowledges that discovery in a special proceeding is rare,” Lantry added. “It is also rare (in fact, it is unprecedented) for a candidate for Mayor of New York City to guarantee that the Board, an entity that the parties concede is independent from the Mayor’s Office, will freeze the rent upon his election to office.”
Plaintiffs argued that the rent freeze was part of a “predetermined outcome.”
“This contention is based largely on the fact that during his campaign for Mayor of New York City, then-Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani repeatedly guaranteed a rent freeze if elected. Petitioners-plaintiffs assert that Mayor Zohran Mamdani, once elected, appointed members to the Board who were ‘predisposed to delivering a rent freeze’ and that some of these members had previously made public statements regarding their views on rent stabilized housing in New York City,” the judge wrote.
Separately, Mamdani recently announced a new fast-tracking of Housing Court cases addressing building management and landlords. The announcement follows his release of a housing blueprint titled, “Block by Block: The Housing Plan for a New Era,” which detailed new construction plans for affordable housing.
